Feature deep-dive

What Professional adds beyond Business

Five additions that turn the archiver into an IT-admin toolkit — the OpenPGP-grade Encryption Suite, PowerArchiver Backup, Cloud, Microsoft 365 add-ins, and Send-to-Secure-FTP — all in one signed installer with one license key. PACL command-line and the full standalone FTP client live in Professional Toolbox.

Encryption Suite — keys, documents, batch crypto, admin policies

Professional's full encryption layer — the same engine PA ships as the standalone Encryption Suite Pro product, bundled in. Full OpenPGP Key Manager, native encryption for Word / Excel / PowerPoint / PDF, AES-256 across all major archive containers, batch crypto for hundreds of files in one operation, and admin-grade Password Profiles + Policies so the passphrases your team actually uses meet your standards.

  • OpenPGP Key Manager — create or import RSA-2048 / RSA-4096 / ECC P-256 / P-384 keys; full encrypt · decrypt · sign · verify workflow
  • Document encryption — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF protected in their native secure formats — no separate container required
  • AES-256 across containers — ZIP/ZIPX AES, PA, PAE, 7-Zip — same algorithm, pick the format your recipient supports
  • Batch encrypt / decrypt — operate on hundreds of files in a single run with one passphrase or one key
  • Password Profiles — pre-defined passphrase profiles per recipient, project, or classification level — stop re-typing
  • Password Policies — admin-enforced minimum passphrase strength so weak passwords can't slip through

For FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography with HIPAA / DFARS compliance paperwork and centralized IT policy enforcement, see Enterprise.

PowerArchiver Backup — VSS-aware, scheduled, multi-target

Enterprise-class backup engine that takes consistent snapshots of locked / open files via Volume Shadow Service (the same mechanism Windows Server Backup uses). Schedule jobs daily / weekly / on-event; route the same backup to up to 3 destinations simultaneously (e.g., local NAS + S3 + burn-to-DVD); detailed logs for audit.

  • VSS snapshots — consistent backups of databases, mail stores, locked files
  • Scheduling — Windows Task Scheduler integration; full / incremental / differential
  • 3 simultaneous destinations — local + cloud + FTP, or any combination
  • Encrypted backups — PAE2 + AES-256 by default
  • Retention rules — keep N versions, roll older ones off, alert on failure
  • Detailed logs — for audit; email-on-failure

PowerArchiver Cloud — 8 services, drag-and-drop, no per-service utility

Native integration with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Yandex Disk, and HiDrive. Drag a folder onto a cloud panel — it uploads. Drag a remote file out — it downloads. No per-service desktop client to install, no separate sync folder to babysit, just direct read/write from the archive UI.

  • Consumer cloud — Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box
  • Enterprise object storage — Amazon S3 (any region), Azure Blob
  • EU regional — Yandex Disk, HiDrive
  • Multi-account — multiple S3 accounts, multiple Azure storage accounts
  • Bandwidth-controlled — pace uploads/downloads to not saturate the link

Office add-ins — Outlook, Word, Excel, all native ribbon

Inserts a "Send Encrypted" / "Compress & Send" button in the Outlook ribbon. Same for Word and Excel. One-click attaches the document as an AES-256-encrypted PAE2 or ZIP-AES archive without leaving Office. The recipient can open it with PowerArchiver, 7-Zip, or any AES-aware ZIP reader. FERPA / HIPAA workflows where you can't email plaintext attachments — solved.

  • Outlook — encrypted attachment in two clicks; auto-passphrase suggestion or your own
  • Word / Excel — "Save Encrypted" + "Send Encrypted" buttons in the ribbon
  • Default encryption — admin-lockable so users can't disable
  • Format flexibility — PAE2 (filename-encrypted) or ZIP-AES (cross-tool readable)

Send-to-Secure-FTP — upload encrypted archives in one click

From the archive UI, right-click any archive and route it to an FTPS or SFTP server with stored credentials. Optional in-flight encryption if the archive isn't already encrypted. Built for the everyday "send this to the vendor's drop folder" pattern — not the full standalone FTP client.

  • FTPS (explicit + implicit) and SFTP — choose what your server supports
  • Stored credentials — encrypted credential profiles per server
  • Resume + integrity check — survives flaky connections
  • One-click from archive — no separate FTP app to switch into

For the full standalone Secure FTP client (multi-server queue, scripting, advanced PASV/EPSV controls, command-line FTP scripting), see Professional Toolbox. For FIPS 140-2 validated FTP components and HIPAA / DFARS compliance, see Enterprise.

Inherits everything from Business

Professional includes every Business feature unchanged — 60+ archive formats, .PA codec, password manager, dual-panel/tabs/queue UX, convert/repair/batch/SFX tools, 36+ language localizations, Section 508 VPAT, ~18 MB RAM footprint, code-signed installer, Windows 7 through 11 + Server 2008 R2 through 2025 (single installer with both 32-bit and 64-bit builds).

See Business edition page for the full base feature breakdown. For PACL command-line and the full standalone FTP client, step up to Professional Toolbox.

Who buys Professional

The default tier for IT-driven workflows

SMB IT admin

2–250 user shop. You're already deploying Microsoft 365 and managing GPO. Professional gives you Outlook encryption add-ins, Backup with VSS for the file server, and Send-to-Secure-FTP for vendor exchanges — all in one MSI you can lock down via group policy. For PACL-driven nightly automation or the full standalone FTP client, step up to Professional Toolbox.

Compliance-driven email workflows

Lawyers, accountants, healthcare offices, schools — anyone who can't email plaintext PHI / PII / financial data. Outlook add-in encrypts attachments to AES-256 in two clicks; recipient opens with any AES-aware tool. For FIPS 140-2 validated encryption, step up to Enterprise.

Cloud-first SMB

Mostly on Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace / Dropbox Business. PowerArchiver Cloud lets you read/write 8 services from one UI — drag content between Drive and S3 without local-syncing either. Plus encrypted archives uploaded directly to S3 / Azure for cold storage.

Compliance-aware power user

You handle regulated data day-to-day — client contracts, financial records, healthcare exports. The full OpenPGP Encryption Suite gives you signed-and-verified archive delivery; PowerArchiver Backup ships VSS-aware snapshots of locked databases; the M365 add-ins keep the workflow inside Outlook/Word/Excel without a sidecar tool. For scripted CI/CD or fleet automation, step up to Professional Toolbox (adds PACL).

"A strong feature set and impressive flexibility are what we love most about PowerArchiver."

FAQ

Common questions about Professional

Does Professional include PACL or the full standalone FTP client?

No. PACL command-line and the full standalone Secure FTP client are Professional Toolbox features. Professional includes Send-to-Secure-FTP (the basic FTPS/SFTP send action from inside the archive UI), which covers the everyday "drop this archive in the vendor's folder" pattern but not multi-server queuing, FTP scripting, or scripted/headless deployment. If your workflow needs CLI automation, GitHub Actions / Task Scheduler integration, or fleet-wide FTP scripting, step up to Toolbox.

How is PowerArchiver Backup different from Windows Server Backup?

Both use VSS for consistent snapshots, but PowerArchiver Backup runs on any Windows (not just Server), supports more destinations (cloud + FTP + local in parallel), creates encrypted PAE2 archives by default, and has a real scheduling UI rather than just Task Scheduler. Best for SMB shops without a dedicated backup product. For larger fleets with central backup infrastructure (Veeam, Commvault, etc.), use those for the file server and PowerArchiver Backup on individual workstations.

Can I use Professional on Windows Server?

Yes. Professional installs and runs on Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2025 (Server 2008 R2 · 2012 · 2012 R2 · 2016 · 2019 · 2022 · 2025). Common server-side use cases: scheduled VSS-aware backups of file shares (via the GUI's scheduling), server-to-cloud archiving from the Cloud panel, and Send-to-Secure-FTP for vendor exchange. For headless / scripted / CI scenarios where you can't show a window, you need the PACL command-line — that's in Professional Toolbox or available standalone via PACL licensing.

What's the difference between Professional and Enterprise?

Professional is per-seat at $34.95 list (volume discounts kick in at 2 seats). Enterprise ($59.95) adds FIPS 140-2 validated encryption, HIPAA / DFARS compliance, audit logging, centralized IT control, secure file shredder, and Home Use for Employees — the validation paperwork regulated industries require. For org-wide deployment without per-seat counting, Enterprise Unlimited starts at from $4,995 (custom-priced by org size). Above ~500–1,000 seats, Enterprise Unlimited typically wins on procurement (one PO, no license counting). If you only need Cloud, M365 add-ins, OpenPGP, Backup, and Send-to-Secure-FTP — without compliance certifications — Professional is the right call. For scripted automation, Toolbox adds PACL.

Is there a 30-day trial?

Yes. The 30-day trial is the full Professional product. All Professional features unlocked — Cloud, Microsoft 365 add-ins, Backup, Send-to-Secure-FTP, OpenPGP — for the trial period. Buy a license at the end if you keep using it; uninstall if not. No auto-conversion to paid. (To trial PACL or the full standalone FTP client, the same installer's Professional Toolbox trial includes them.)

Is the Office add-in compatible with all Office versions?

Yes — every downloadable version of Office is supported. Outlook, Word, and Excel from Microsoft 365, plus the boxed releases, all run the add-in. No separate registration, no app-store step — the add-in installs with the standard PowerArchiver MSI and shows up in the ribbon next time you open Office.
